    Echo Aprons Donation

Royal Edward Lodge based in Leominster, with matched finding from the Hereford Masonic Charity Association, recently donated £1,000 to ECHO, a charity that helps adults with learning difficulties.

ECHO is an independent, Herefordshire-based charity with 230 members and over 150 volunteers. Their main office is in Leominster, but their projects run in many different community-based venues.

Most of their activities are suitable for people with moderate or severe learning difficulties, but they will try to support anyone who wishes to take part in their activities, including those with mental health difficulties or physical or sensory impairments.

The donation was used to purchase forty-eight aprons of different colours for different types of activities.  Each had “Generously donated by Herefordshire Freemasons” embroidered on them.

Nic Bullock, Deputy Chief Officer of ECHO, thanked Tim Bridgland Taylor, the Provincial Grand Charity Steward for Herefordshire Freemasons, saying.

“I want to thank you personally and your organisation for your continued generosity in supporting the work of ECHO. On receipt, I’ll share our plans on how your matched funding will be of significant benefit to our disabled participants.”

    – Nic Bullock, Deputy Chief Officer of ECHO

  • Herefordshire Freemasons donate a hoist to Hereford based charity Shaftesbury.

Herefordshire Freemasons donate a hoist to Hereford based charity Shaftesbury.

In 2024, Shaftesbury was chosen as the new name for disability charity Livability, in honour of their renowned Victorian founder, the seventh Earl of Shaftesbury.

Based in Wall Street, Hereford, Shaftesbury is a disability charity that works with the people they support to promote inclusion, independence and opportunity, enabling them to make their own choices by co-producing care plans and service delivery options.

Utilising state-of-the-art equipment, facilities and highly trained staff they specialise in supporting people with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and acquired brain injury or stroke. The service takes a person-centred, flexible approach creating care and support plans that meet personal goals and needs.

Personal choice about how residents live is top of the list for people at Wall Street, with active support from staff. Hoists are vital tools in achieving this, providing safe and secure mobility for individuals with disabilities. By supporting the Hoist Appeal, Herefordshire Freemasons have helped to transform lives.

The charity is funded through donations and Herefordshire Freemasons have donated £1,200 through the Herefordshire Masonic Charitable Association to purchase a hoist to assist staff with the mobility, to be sourced with the assistance of TPG Disabled Aids.

The Head of Freemasonry in Herefordshire, Michael Holland, and the Provincial Grand Charity Steward Tim Bridgland-Taylor visited Shaftesbury’s Hereford based residential home in January, to see how the donation was enabling Shaftesbury to support people with disabilities in Hereford.

During a tour of the facilities, they saw first-hand how the new hoist was being used and had a chance to talk to staff and residents.

Georgia Loyd, the Registered Manager, said about the donation of the hoist:

“The donated hoist is invaluable, as this promotes the inclusion, and improves the lives, of the people we support.  This means they can lead a fulfilling and high-quality life”.

The people we support who were pictured were Steve, Matthew and Helen, and staff members were Georgia (Registered Manager), John and Dylan (Enabling Support Workers).

  • Herefordshire Freemasons Answer The Call

    Herefordshire Freemasons Answer The Call

Freemasons from across Herefordshire have played key roles in co-ordinating elements of the 2024 Poppy Appeal

An urgent call for help was received from the Royal British Legion part way through October.

“Could you help with the distribution of Poppy boxes and collection tins in Hereford?”

An urgent appeal was made to the members of Herefordshire Freemasons which was answered

Poppy boxes and collection tins needed to be delivered to several local schools and business establishments in North Hereford. An urgent appeal was made to the members of Herefordshire Freemasons which was answered by several willing volunteers including military veterans within the Freemason community.

The various boxes and collection tins were collected and distributed ready for the appeal and then picked up and delivered to the TA Centre for counting afterwards.

Eastnor Lodge were already helping in Ledbury by taking on responsibility for running the appeal locally.

Time was tight but the team worked together to co-ordinate ordering poppies/school kits, wreaths and many items based on historic sales information. Once they had been delivered it was then a case of sorting ready to be taken to local schools, homes and shops.

On 18th October over 60 boxes and tins were delivered around the town and outlying villages. Notices were sent to the other 30 groups who wanted wreaths and other items. The following week was spent co-ordinating collection points in superstores and the High Street, with volunteers who included several Lodge members, plus some training on using the card machines!

The poppies were out, and collectors were collecting! The Appeal was officially launched on 24th October.

After the two-week appeal across Ledbury, the Lodge members and their partners, together with local volunteers, began collecting the tins from shops, schools and other venues across the town. This took a couple of days, but then counting could begin.

With two teams of five and the use of the conference room at the Feathers Hotel, together with two coin-counting machines, the monies from over sixty tins and buckets were counted. The total, including donations via card machines and QR codes, was up by forty percent on last year.

Thank you to the public of Ledbury for their generosity, and the Lodge members and their partners who gave up their time to make this first year of help a great success.

Now to start planning for next year!

  • Summer Update 2024

    Summer Update 2024

As Freemasons across Herefordshire ease themselves back into regular monthly Lodge meetings, we reflect on a busy summer of social activities and community service

The Caeruleum Club supported several events for St Michael’s Hospice including manning checkpoints for the Venus Walk in July and stewarding the car park at other events for St Michael’s and also the Military Veterans Day in Allensmore reinforcing our commitment to the Armed Services Covenant.

We had three teams take part in the Four Province Masonic Regatta at Worcester where one of our teams, the Hereford Vaga team, came a very credible second place overall.

The Provincial Golf Society attended several matches across the country and ran our very own Open Event at South Herefordshire Gold Course. This proved a popular event, even the rain did not manage to dampen enthusiasm.

We opened our doors by holding an open day at the Masonic Hall in Ross on Wye and attended a number of village fetes with our pop-up stand to raise awareness of what we are about and we do for the local community.

A very busy summer, and now we ease ourselves back into monthly Lodge meetings with one of the first lodge meetings in September bringing in two new Freemasons in one night at Dean Waterfield Lodge. This meeting was the first visit of the season by the Head of Freemasonry in Herefordshire and his Provincial Team.
